{ Trend Hungry Tuesday } Lots of Leg at the VMAs

Fashions from the MTV Video Music Awards seemed to show a whole lot of leg this year. Miley Cyrus displayed lots of leg, among other body parts, in many of her VMA looks.

Chrissy Teigen, she wore a fringe number that let us see all of her legs. Bella Thorne, Rita Ora, and Gigi Hadid all sported leggy looks on the multi-colored carpet, as did Cara Delevingne and Kylie Jenner — those two  rocked mini dresses to the award show.
{ Try The Trend } Opt for a mini skirt and pair with a more modest top to avoid it going from trendy instead to trashy.

{ Best Dressed } 2015 MTV VMA Fashion

Last night I was glued to the TV for one of my favorite award shows. It was also in the name of research for this blog post and a VMA fashion recap with Fox29 this AM. Miley Cyrus had a slew of silly outfit changes, and I LOVED them all! Taylor Swift came with her posse of  gorgeous girls from her “Bad Blood” music video and owned the night. Justin Bieber, he opted for a new hairdo (or don’t) that resembles Kate Gosselin’s infamous cut. Yes, the MTV Video Music Awards went off with some stellar performances and styles to match. Here are my favorite fashions from the night.

Miley in lots of eccentric looks } This girl is her brand and I ate it up. Her unique outfits really fit the event, her personality, and enhanced the evening. My favorite was the eye top and lip bottom.

Chrissy Teigen in a sexy Marchesa number } She has quickly become the style setter I look for on the carpet. She doesn’t disappoint and she and her man definitely are my pick for best-dressed couple.

Gigi Hadid in a leggy, yellow Emelia Wickstead gown } When did this girl become so famous? She is everywhere and I just realized her mom is on “Real Housewives of Orange County.” Chrissy Teigen posted this pic on her Instagram declaring Gigi as best dressed. I have to agree!

{ Dare To Wear } Summer In Style

Oh look, a puppy! She calls me Aunt Jessie and she decided to step in and model. Turns out it was also recently National Dog Day (who came up with all these holidays?), so even more reason to have this adorable fur baby on the blog.

This top should look familiar, as it’s been on repeat on the blog and in my life. This is look #3 for August’s Dare To Wear series (see looks: #1, #2) and it’s one that I pretty much lived in all summer, and I mean lived in. From groceries, to the beach, to errands, to chilling, to blogging, this was pretty much what I wore … give or take a few accessories.

{ Style Tips }

1.  Shorten shirt with a half tuck. The tuck can create draping, which is very figure flattering, and allows me to wear a longer shirt with shorter shorts.

2. Big brims = less wrinkles. I love the sun but value my skin, which is why I wore this hat to the beach, pool, and even just around town. There’s something glamorous about a wide-brimmed hat.

3. DIY an outfit accent. It can be a homemade bracelet, key chain for your bag, a headband or whatever. What’s unique is what makes you stand out. In this case we used hand-made tassels courtesy of my friend Kate and she tied it to a chain from a necklace. Bam, instant and unique accessory.

Special thanks to Kate Michener for assisting on this shoot and her pup Maizy for gracing us with her modeling skills. Isn’t she the cutest?!

{ DIY } Tassels

Time for a DIY and this one is fit for fashion and decor. It comes to us care of my friend Kate. You may have noticed her name popping up on the blog lately. That’s because she collaborated with me on my August blog photo shoot and also crafted the amazing tassels I’ve been wearing (they’ll be in an upcoming outfit post too!). She initially made them as decoration for a big event here in Philly for Philadelphia Magazine, but once I spotted them I had to wear, and ask her how she made them, of course!  And now, Kate’s tassel tutorial. Pin now, DIY later!  – JH

NOTE:  If you plan on dip dying your tassels, use cotton materials!  They absorb the color much better than synthetic fibers.

How to make tassels

1.  Hold the strand between your fingers and wrap around your elbow multiple times.  I usually do about 15-20 times around.

tassel DIY tutorial

2.  Pull the material tight as you remove it from your arm and lay it down. Double knot a shorter piece of string around the middle, which will then become the top of your tassel.

3.  Cut the looped ends of the tassel so each becomes a single strand.  Trim to the length you want.

4.  About a half-inch down from the top of your tassel, tie a piece of string to create the decorative ball-shaped top of your tassel.  Wrap around once or multiple times to create the look you want, then cut the excess.

Ta-da — Tassel! You can change the size of the tassel by wrapping the string around something larger or smaller than your arm, and the thickness by adding or subtracting the amount of times you loop the string around.  Customize by dip dying, stringing into a garland, changing the material you use, adding beads, or styling your own way.

Happy DIY-ing!!

Strobe makeup

{ Trend Hungry Tuesday } Strobe Like A Celebrity

Skip the heavy bronzers. Turns out contouring is out and strobing is in. It’s how celebs achieve that Hollywood glow.

Strobing is the simple makeup technique of highlighting to creates  youthful, dewy look, that catches the light just right way for photos.

Two A-list ladies known for their glow, J.Lo and Beyonce are longtime strobers.

Other celebs embracing strobing are Taylor SwiftKendall Jenner and Kerry Washington.

Take note of the shine on Kendall’s forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. That’s thanks to strobing.

Try the Trend

All you need is some highlighter or illuminator. My pick: Highbeam from Benefit Cosmetics for light a complexion and their Sunbeam option for tan and darker skin tones, $26 at Sephora.

Strobe makeup

Also Physicians Formula from the drugstore has makeup palettes you can strobe with for around $12.

Apply to your forehead, bridge of the nose, the brow bone, cheeks, chin, and cupid’s bow.

{ Five Things Wellness } Refreshing Face Mists + Glowing Skin

Having clear and radiant skin is really important to me. It might just be my number one beauty priority. I have pretty sensitive skin and get more than the average occasional breakout. Not fun. When my skin behaves, I feel more confident (hey — look good, feel good!). My obsession: finding good products to achieve gorgeous and glowing skin — this also includes incorporating healthier eating habits. – MQ

Here are { Five Things Wellness } to help you get glowing, radiant skin:

1. Hydrating Face Mists

Face mists are vert refreshing! My favorite times to use them are after a workout or on humid days.With just a spritz or two, a good face mist helps me feel glowing verses grimy. I also find them useful whenever my skin feels like it’s craving moisture. Use in warm months for a face refreshments and keep around all year to combat dry, winter skin.

Bonus: Not only is Vitamin E super moisturizing, it also strengthens skin’s UV defense.

{ Try The Body Shop’s Paraben Free Vitamin E Face Mask, $17.00. }

2. Coffee Scrubs

Who knew caffeine had a few glowy-skin benefits? The high-caffeine content stimulates blood flow, which can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks, psoriasis, varicose veins, eczema, acne, and scarring. I found out about Frank Body through their stylish and artsy Instagram photos. Style and wellness? Yes. Please.

{ Try Frank Body’s Original Body Scrub, $14.95. | image via }

3. BeeSpa Hand + Foot Cream

I think I found the holy grail of all hand + foot creams. Without a doubt, BeeSpa is by far the best one I’ve ever tried. BeeSpa is made from all natural, botanical, vegetable-based, and vitamin rich ingredients Main ingredients include beeswax, shea butter, and essential oils.

Some benefits? This cream hydrates and softens skin, has anti-aging vitamins A, E, and D, contains antioxidants to nourish skin, and help maintain skin elasticity.

{ BeeSpa is available online and in a few retail locations, $29.99. }

4. Credo Beauty

I don’t strictly use only natural products, but because of my sensitive skin I just try to use more of them. Credo Beauty has definitely helped introduce me to natural brands. They have a page dedicated to clean beauty swaps, so you can find a replacement product for one that is clean, natural, and effective. Credo is like the Sephora or Ulta of natural beauty brands. The brick-and-mortar store is in San Francisco, but they recently opened an online shop, meaning we can all enjoy their goodies from anywhere. Yay!

 { Check out Credo Beauty’s extensive list of natural beauty brands. }

5. Homemade Watermelon Juice

If you think eating watermelon is refreshing, try drinking it. You’ll be glad you did. I wish I did this sooner. Watermelons are rich in antioxidants, lycopene and Vitamins A and C that reduce free radicals, ya know, those pesky things that cause fine lines and wrinkles. Writing about watermelon juice is giving me some serious cravings. Here’s a super-simple recipe that’s super-tasty too.

{ Trend Hungry Tuesday Shoesday } Pointed Pumps

Let’s call it Shoesday & talk about a footwear fashion that always seems to come back in style. I’ve been noticing a number of celebs wearing it lately. Pointed pumps, aka heeled-shoes where the toe comes to a point, was a hit on the blue carpet of the Teen Choice Awards.

Zendaya shoe collection

{ image via }

Jordin Sparks spotted a style with a skull design. Zendaya donned shoes from her upcoming collection and a slitted skirt. Lea Michele opted for her pointed pumps in red, which acted as a fun pop and coordinated with the design on her dress.

Other celebs recently spotted styled in pointed pumps include Eva Longoria, Mindy Kaling, and Lady GaGa, who wrote that she loves her pair pictured below so much that she once wore them to bed with a smile on her face. Can’t blame her. They are Prada and beautiful.

Lady-GaGa-Prada heels

I love this shoe style for transitioning into fall. It’s less coverage than a boot and more than a sandal or open-toe style. Plus the point adds style and sophistication to even a basic tee shirt and jeans. Wear to work, on a date, or somewhere fun. All of these are under $40 from

{ Dare To Wear } Happy-Hour Chic

And now, time for another edition of Dare To Wear, the blog series that keeps the fashions in rotation so that outfit remixes can be made. The more you play with your clothes the more ideas you’ll come up with (I type from experience).

This long-and-lovely tank top with a slitted skirt may not be my initial instinct, but when I want to create three different looks using the same piece it pushes me to rework the wardrobe. The result = new outfits! Can’t be mad at that. I’m especially not mad at this look and will be keeping in mind for the next time I need to look happy-hour chic. The top keeps it ladylike with a relaxed vibe, while the slit adds a splash of sexiness.

{ Style Tips }

1. Wear a belt. A belt is the accessory that brings things in and helps to create that hourglass shape.

2. Borrow from a friend to get the look just right. I forgot my bag of jewelry at home (couldn’t even believe it!) so borrowed the sunnies in the previous look and bracelet from my friend Kate, who also assisted on the shoot and scouted this great location.

3. Carry yourself with confidence. It really is the secret sauce to looking your best. Wear it and work it.

4. Accessorize your accessories & embrace the unexpected. The tassel (it’s a DIY coming up!) clipped onto the hat may be my favorite thing about this whole look. It’s a little detail that’s the perfect unexpected accent.

  • Peel off the clear plastic film, then stick that side of the design (should feel a little sticky) to the glass.
  • Hold firmly in place and rub a wet paper towel over the decal, just like how you’d apply the fake tattoo to your skin.
